We are excited to present to you with another offering from Kenya. Sourced from the region of Nyeri, this carefully processed coffee comes from the Gatomboya washing station, long known for producing great coffees.
Gatomboya is one of the four washing stations—called factories in Kenya—that make up the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society, consisting of 698 farmer members. Through a long tradition of coffee production and careful agricultural practices, Gatomboya has made its name as one of the best factories in the region, with consistently high-quality cup profiles.
Varieties in this lot of coffee include SL28 and SL34, which were developed in Kenya for their ability to withstand growing challenges, especially drought. These varieties grow well at high elevations and give good, slowly maturing yields of large cherries. These characteristics of SL28 and SL34, when they’re farmed and processed with attention to detail and intentionality, lend many Kenyan coffees consistency, approachability, and great flavor potential.
Many of us here at Maru are big fans of coffees from Gatomboya, especially for their wonderful acidity and juicy body. In this one, we taste sparkling acidity, blackberry, and creamy notes of sweet tangerine and emerald plum.
